Deutz-Allis – other models: the US brand of 1985 to 1990, from the four-wheel-drive 4W-305 to the 5 and 6 series, 37 to 227 kW, Deutz diesel engines

Deutz-Allis was the brand name under which the German engine and tractor group Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz (KHD) continued, from 1985 to 1990, the Allis-Chalmers farm equipment division it had acquired in the United States in 1985. The ranges partly carried on the predecessor's naming – 4W-305 denotes a large four-wheel-drive model of around 305 hp, DX 110 the continuation of the Allis-Chalmers DX series – and partly introduced new, Deutz-own types such as the 5 and 6 series (5.125 L, 5.170, 5.65F, 6250V, 6275LU). In 1990 management bought out the US division and ran it first as Deutz-Allis, then as AGCO-Allis, and finally as part of AGCO.

The register lists here 7 versions with 37 to 227 kW (50 to 305 hp), mostly with Deutz diesel engines, one model with an Allis-Chalmers engine.

The short Deutz-Allis era marks the transition from the storied American brand Allis-Chalmers to today's AGCO group, and with the 4W-305 also covered the top end of the North American big-tractor market, competing there against the four-wheel-drive flagships of Case IH, John Deere and Versatile.

On these transitional models, what counts is the condition of the Deutz or Allis-Chalmers engine, the function of four-wheel steering and articulation on the 4W-305, the condition of clutch, gearbox and hydraulics, and rust on the cab and bodywork; parts today mostly run through AGCO and specialist Allis-Chalmers dealers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
