The TITAN series from Deering International includes the TITAN 12-25. Production: 1914–1917. The engine delivers 25.3 hp (18.6 kW), has 4 cylinders, with a displacement of 11,352 cm³. Rated speed is 575 rpm. The machine is 3,569 mm long, 2,172 mm wide and 2,997 mm high. The unladen weight is 4,345 kg. Top speed is 3.9 km/h. Transmission: 2 V/1 R. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 40" x 7", rear 66" x 14". The fuel is Kerosin/Benzin. The bore measures 133.35 mm. The stroke is 203.2 mm. Construction: frame construction. The TITAN-Baureihe series covers 4 models. Rated output within it ranges from 20.3 to 60.8 hp; the TITAN 12-25 sits at the bottom of that range with 25.3 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the TITAN 10-20 below it with 20.3 hp and the TITAN 18-35 above it with 35.5 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 2,589 to 9,344 kg; here the TITAN 12-25 sits in the lower part of that range with 4,345 kg. 4 Deering International models are on record.

Deering International Titan-Baureihe – large tractors from the 1910s: types Titan 10-20 to Titan 30-60, two- to four-cylinder engines up to 44.7 kW, unladen weights of 2,589 to 9,344 kg

International Harvester was formed in 1902 from the merger of several American farm-machinery makers, including the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company and the Deering Harvester Company; Titan was one of the new group's early tractor brands, under which large tractors such as the Titan 10-20 were built in the 1910s, before the brand was superseded by the subsequent McCormick-Deering tractors. The type numbers such as 10-20, 12-25, 18-35 and 30-60 state the power output at the drawbar and belt pulley in horsepower.

The register lists 4 versions with 14.9 to 44.7 kW from two- to four-cylinder engines of 8,700 to 11,352 cm³ displacement, unladen weights from 2,589 to 9,344 kg and very low rated speeds of 335 to 575 rpm, typical of this early generation of tractors; lengths range from 3,569 to 4,877 mm, widths from 1,524 to 2,667 mm, heights from 1,695 to 3,124 mm. The Titan tractors ran on kerosene or a petrol-kerosene mixture.

The Titan range ranked among the best-selling tractors in North America in the 1910s and contributed significantly to the mechanisation of US agriculture, competing directly with International Harvester's own Mogul range as well as with Fordson and the early Case tractors.

On a used tractor from this early Titan range, the condition of the belt pulley and power take-off, the tightness of the cooling system and the large-displacement engines, corrosion on the frame and steel wheels, and the function of the belt clutch all count; since these are museum-grade pieces from the earliest days of tractor building, parts are practically only available within collector and restoration circles.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
