David Brown 94 series (1983–1986) – the last white tractors from Meltham: 1194 to 1694, the final digits 94 as series, the first digits as size class, A for four-wheel drive, three

The 94 series was the last tractor generation under the David Brown name: the maker from Meltham in Yorkshire, in tractor building since 1936 and owned by Case since 1972, brought it out in 1983 as successor to the 90 series, and after the merger of Case and International Harvester in 1985 the tractors continued in red as Case International 94 until the Meltham plant closed in 1988. The type logic: the final digits 94 mark the series, the first digits order the size in ascending order – 1194 the three-cylinder around 48 hp, 1294 and 1394 the four-cylinder mid-range, 1494 and 1594 the big four-cylinders around 80 to 95 hp, 1694 the six-cylinder with about 108 hp – A four-wheel drive. The engines are David Brown's own diesels of 2.7 to 5.4 litres at 2,200 to 2,300 rpm, the transmissions the synchromesh gearboxes with Hydra-Shift powershift step, the hydraulics the Selectamatic system – and the cab the Q-Cab, regarded as one of the quietest of its time.

The register lists 6 versions with 35.3 to 79.4 kW from three- to six-cylinders of 2,699 to 5,392 cm³, torque from 167 to 396 Nm, unladen weights from 2,110 to 4,345 kg, lengths from 3,073 to 4,250 mm, widths from 1,778 to 2,007 mm and heights from 2,388 to 2,743 mm.

The 94s are still numerous at work in Britain, Ireland and Australia and for collectors the last generation of the white tractors from Meltham, whose history had begun with the Ferguson-Brown of 1936.

On used tractors, operating hours, engine condition and injection pump, clutch, gearbox and Hydra-Shift, Selectamatic hydraulics, four-wheel-drive clutch on A models, cab and sheet metal count; parts run through Case IH and David Brown specialists.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
