Daimler-Benz Unimog – Universal-Motor-Gerät from Gaggenau and Wörth, series 404, 406 and 435, U 1300 L and U 1700 L, 3,170 to 7,925kg kerb weight
The Unimog (Universal-Motor-Gerät) emerged after the Second World War at Boehringer in Göppingen and passed to Daimler-Benz in 1951, which built the vehicles first in Gaggenau and later also in Wörth am Rhein. The three-digit series numbers such as 404, 406 and 435 denote successive generations, while the four-digit U types such as U 1300 L and U 1700 L state the payload class and power level, with L denoting the long-wheelbase chassis. The 404 series also served the military of several countries, while the 406 series was especially widespread in agriculture.

The register lists 7 versions of 2,181 to 5,958cc from six-cylinder engines, kerb weights of 3,170 to 7,925kg, gross vehicle weights of 3,500 to 10,000kg, lengths of 5,450 to 6,650mm and widths of 2,000 to 2,450mm.
The Unimog established itself as an off-road universal vehicle for agriculture, municipalities, forestry, mountain rescue and the military, and thanks to portal axles, power take-offs at both ends and a wide range of implements it has remained without direct competition in its niche. In flood response and mountain rescue, the Unimog's wading depth and climbing ability made it a fixture of many fire and rescue service fleets.
When buying: check the condition of the portal axles and differentials, corrosion on the frame and cab, implement mounts and power take-offs, the brakes and tyre age on lightly used municipal vehicles; parts and servicing run through the Mercedes-Benz Unimog network.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
