DAF VH – light chassis from the Dutch manufacturer up to 3.5 tonnes: 2.5-litre four-cylinder, 2.90 and 3.20-metre wheelbase variants, gross weights up to 3,500 kg

DAF is a Dutch commercial-vehicle manufacturer from Eindhoven, founded in 1928 as the trailer maker Van Doorne, which began building its own trucks from the 1950s and has belonged to the US PACCAR group since 1996. The VH models covered here are light chassis with a gross weight of up to 3.5 tonnes and, like other vans in this weight class, are registered as N1 vehicles; the suffixes EN and ET, together with the wheelbase figures of 2.90 and 3.20 in designations such as "VH 428 EN 2.90", distinguish body or wheelbase variants of the same chassis.

The register lists 9 versions with four-cylinder engines of a constant 2,498 cc. Kerb weights run from 1,770 to 2,560 kg, gross vehicle weights from 2,800 to 3,500 kg; width is recorded uniformly as 2,030 mm.

As a light chassis, the VH series mainly served as the base for box, van and flatbed bodies in distribution work and trades, competing with comparable chassis from Mercedes-Benz, Ford and Iveco in the same weight class.

When buying a used example, checks should cover corrosion on the chassis frame and at the body mounting points, the condition of the four-cylinder diesel engine including its injection pump, and wear in the clutch and gearbox. As many examples served in continuous commercial duty, it is worth reviewing service records and mileage. Parts for chassis and drivetrain are available through the DAF service network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
