The register lists 22 versions from six-cylinder engines throughout of 5,883 to 14,016 cm³, unladen weights from 4,940 to 13,460 kg, gross weights from 13,000 to 20,500 kg, lengths from 5,470 to 7,900 mm and widths from 2,360 to 2,550 mm.

Alongside Mercedes-Benz, MAN, Scania, Volvo and Iveco, DAF is one of the big European truck makers and has traditionally been market leader in the long-haul segment in the Netherlands and Belgium; the XF range is regarded as one of the most aerodynamic tractor units in its class.

On used examples, the engine's mileage and service book, the condition of clutch and gearbox, rust on the frame and cab mounts and, on tractor units, the condition of the fifth wheel count; parts run through DAF's dense service network across Europe.

With gross vehicle weights from 13,000 to 20,500 kg, these chassis belong entirely to EU class N3 (over 12 t); operating them requires a category CE driving licence, a tachograph and compliance with driving and rest times, plus, in almost every European country, a distance-based toll. XF tractor units of this generation were usually fitted with a retarder for long descents, a wear-free supplementary brake alongside the engine brake.
