DAF MB: the collection page for the Dutch heavy truck of the 1960s and 1970s, six-cylinder diesels from 8.3 to 11.6 litres, gross weights up to 18 tonnes

The MB range was DAF's heavy truck programme of the 1960s and 1970s; DAF, the Dutch commercial vehicle maker founded in Eindhoven in 1928, began building its own trucks in 1949. The letter and number combinations after the type number — such as DKCL, DKDL or DKFL — denote cab, wheelbase and equipment variants of the respective chassis combination; the follow-on MB 230 received a more powerful engine. DAF was later spun off as an independent company and has belonged to the US group PACCAR since 1996.

The register lists 17 versions here with 8,300 to 11,630 cm³ displacement from exclusively six-cylinder diesel engines, weights of 8,595 to 14,630 kg, gross vehicle weights of 16,300 to 18,000 kg, lengths of 10,600 to 12,000 mm and widths of 2,450 to 2,550 mm.

As a heavy long-haul and distribution truck of its era, the MB range competed directly with contemporary models from Mercedes-Benz, Volvo and Scania, and helped establish DAF as an independent European truck brand alongside its chassis business supplying international body builders.

On these historic vehicles, check rust on the cab and frame, the condition of the six-cylinder diesel's injection pump, the clutch and gearbox, the air brake system, and the cab mounting and tilt mechanism; parts generally run through vintage-truck specialists and the DAF museum network.

What to check before buying

  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
