The DAF LF 220 FAN belongs to the LF series. Production: 2014-2016. The engine has 6 cylinders, with a displacement of 6,700 cm³. The vehicle is 8,000 mm long and 2,520 mm wide. The unladen weight is 12,665 kg. The wheelbase measures 5,120 mm. The gross vehicle weight is 22,500 kg. The vehicle runs on 6 wheels. The LF series covers 64 models. Unladen weight within it ranges from 3,320 to 17,943 kg; the LF 220 FAN sits in the upper part of that range with 12,665 kg. Its immediate neighbours are the 55EN3 below it with 12,075 kg and the LF 220 FAG above it with 12,709 kg. Gross vehicle weight within it ranges from 3,500 to 29,500 kg; here the LF 220 FAN sits in the upper part of that range with 22,500 kg. 3352 DAF models across 109 series are on record.

DAF LF — the distribution truck with British roots: from the Leyland Roadrunner through the 45/55 range to the standalone LF chassis for distribution work

The LF is DAF's distribution range, and its ancestry is unusual: it descends from the Leyland Roadrunner. From that came the DAF 45/55 range, revised and extended in 1994 after Leyland DAF's bankruptcy in 1993 and the takeover by Paccar. It ran until 2001, when the newly developed LF, engineered in the United Kingdom, replaced it.

The change brought a change of engines. The 45 and 55 ranges used Cummins units of 5.88 litres producing up to 235 hp. The successor LF received Paccar engines of the PX family, more compactly built and quieter in operation thanks to the integration of several components into block and cylinder head.

The LF range was expressly developed for distribution work and is graded accordingly: a wide choice of wheelbases, load ratings and engine versions. That is exactly what makes used comparison demanding — two vehicles of the same designation can differ markedly in wheelbase and body.

Anyone examining an older vehicle should therefore first establish whether it is still a 45/55 or already an LF. The transition around 2001 separates not just two names but two engine families — and with them two different worlds of spare parts.

With gross vehicle weights from 3,500 to 29,500 kg, the LF range spans from the boundary of EU class N1 well into class N3 (over 12 t); depending on version, this requires a category C1, C or CE driving licence, together with a tachograph, driving and rest times and, in most countries, a distance-based toll. From Euro 5 onward the emissions stage required SCR catalysis with AdBlue, whereas the earlier Cummins engines of the preceding 45/55 range handled this solely through exhaust-gas recirculation.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
