DAF HD – historic trailers from Eindhoven: six versions from the HD 15 to the HD 32CC-1600, 3,970 to 6,770 kg unladen weight, 14,600 to 22,500 kg gross weight

DAF was founded in Eindhoven in 1928 as Van Doorne's Aanhangwagen Fabriek and built only trailers in its early years, before entering truck production in the 1930s and becoming Van Doorne's Automobielfabriek – the HD range gathered on this page stems from that early trailer production. It runs from the compact HD 15 through the twin-axle HD 2400-1300, HD 2400-1600 and HD 2600-1600 to the special HD 1900-1300 S and the HD 32CC-1600.

The register lists six versions of the HD range with unladen weights from 3,970 to 6,770 kg, gross weights from 14,600 to 22,500 kg, lengths from 9,150 to 10,500 mm and widths from 2,200 to 2,500 mm. The span shows twin-axle trailers for classic road haulage, with payloads exceeding 15 tonnes on the heaviest versions.

Trailers of this type formed the backbone of European road haulage for decades, before the market shifted towards semi-trailer combinations with tractor units. As early products of a company that later grew into a truck manufacturer, the HD range documents a chapter of Dutch commercial vehicle history that today mainly interests collectors and vintage hauliers.

When buying a used example of this age, what matters most is the condition of the frame, drawbar and coupling, the function of the overrun brake, corrosion on leaf springs, axles and connection points, and the state of the side panels and load floor. Parts for historic DAF trailers are barely available through regular trade, so restorations usually rely on substitute repairs, adapting common axle and brake components, or stock held by vintage commercial vehicle specialists.

What to check before buying

  • Search the frame and welds at the axle mounts — that is where cracks start.
  • Check the brakes and the last inspection in the papers.
  • Work the gross weight against the towing vehicle before buying.
  • Compare the chassis number with the papers.
  • Look at the floor, cover or body from the inside — rust does not show from outside.
