In DAF's chassis logic, the S marks a liftable trailing axle that, together with the basic 4x2 FA chassis, makes a 6x2 three-axle truck: unlike the fixed axle of the FAN chassis, it can be raised when empty or partly loaded to save tyres and tolls. The liftable trailing axle suits duties with changing loads, such as groupage haulage, tankers or concrete mixers, where vehicles often return partly loaded or empty; on DAF 6x2 chassis it is the more common variant compared with the rigid FAN axle. Raising the third axle also cuts tyre wear and the road tolls charged according to the number of axles bearing on the road.
