With the X15N 400, Cummins offers a model from the X15N series. Production: 2024-2026. The engine has a displacement of 12,900 cm³. The fuel is Compressed Natural Gas. Liquefied Natural Gas. The rated output is 298.3 kW. The engine is turbocharged. It is a diesel engine. The X15N series covers 9 models. Rated output within it ranges from 298.3 to 372.8 kW; the X15N 400 sits at the bottom of that range with 298.3 kW. Its immediate neighbours are the X15N 450 above it with 335.6 kW. 517 Cummins models across 22 series are on record.

Cummins X15N — the First Natural-Gas Engine Built for Long-Haul Trucking – inline six-cylinder natural-gas engine of 14.9 litres, up to 500 hp, for heavy-duty long-haul trucking

The X15N is the natural-gas (CNG) version of the Cummins X15 platform and, according to Cummins, the first natural-gas engine purpose-built for long-haul trucking at this power level. It shares the diesel X15's 14.9-liter displacement and 137 x 169 mm bore and stroke. Cummins rates it at up to 500 hp and 1,850 lb-ft of torque.

Development included fleet testing of pre-production engines starting in 2023, building on early success in the Chinese truck market; North American series production began in 2024 at the Jamestown, New York plant. The X15N complements the diesel X15 family with a gas variant that Cummins says achieves CO2 and NOx levels roughly 90 percent below current EPA limits.

From late 2024 the X15N became available in Peterbilt and Kenworth chassis, and Freightliner added it from early 2025 — signaling that the engine is establishing itself as a natural-gas alternative in heavy-duty long-haul trucking.

Like other stoichiometric gas engines, the X15N follows the Otto-cycle principle with spark ignition rather than a diesel's compression ignition, so specific output per litre is naturally lower than a comparable diesel inline six. On vehicles fuelled with liquefied natural gas (LNG), the gas system also involves the cryogenics of insulated tanks, whose vacuum insulation and boil-off management are additional, LNG-specific check points compared with a pure CNG version.

Given how new the technology is, a used X15N truck should be checked primarily for gas-system maintenance (tanks, injection system) and its certification; there is little public long-term wear data yet for this young engine.

What to check before buying

  • Match the data plate against the order: frame size, mounting and rating have to agree.
  • For used units, ask about winding condition and bearing play.
  • Ask about parts availability for this series — the running costs hang on it.
