Cummins Inc. of Columbus, Indiana, founded in 1919, is one of the largest independent makers of diesel and gas engines for heavy commercial vehicles worldwide. The ISX12 range is Cummins' flagship for long-haul tractor units, while the B6.7N engines drive medium-duty trucks and coaches; the ISBG and ISLG natural-gas variants target emission-sensitive fleets such as city buses and refuse trucks. In the North American heavy highway-engine market, Cummins competes chiefly with Detroit Diesel, PACCAR MX and the Volvo and Mack engines.
On a used purchase, mileage and service records count, on the diesel variants the condition of the injection pump or injectors and turbocharger, on the gas engines the condition of the gas system and spark plugs in place of a glow or pre-heat system, and depending on model year the exhaust aftertreatment with particulate filter and SCR catalyst; spare parts run through the dense Cummins dealer network.
