The ISX15 550 from Cummins is part of the ISX15 series. Production: 2012-2015. The fuel is diesel. The rated output is 403.4 kW. Application: HHDD. The engine is single-stage turbocharged. Fuel reaches the combustion chamber through electronically controlled direct injection. It is a diesel engine. The ISX15 series covers 31 models. Rated output within it ranges from 269.9 to 434.7 kW; the ISX15 550 sits in the upper part of that range with 403.4 kW. Its immediate neighbours are the ISX15 525 below it with 397.5 kW and the ISX15 600RV above it with 410.1 kW. 517 Cummins models across 22 series are on record.

Cummins ISX15 – the heavy six-cylinder of the EPA 2010 era (2010–2016): 14.9 litres, 362 to 583 hp, SCR instead of EGR alone

The ISX15 is the development stage of Cummins' ISX family, which appeared in 1998 as the first heavy Cummins with electronic control and replaced the N14. With the US emissions standard EPA 2010 the engine gained SCR aftertreatment with urea in addition to particulate filter and cooled exhaust gas recirculation – the previous EPA 2007 generation had relied on EGR alone and was known for high heat load and fuel consumption. The ISX15 ran until 2016 and was replaced in 2017 by the X15, which carries the same displacement forward.

The number in the name is the output in hp; appended codes such as ST (SmartTorque, with increased torque in the top gears), EV or MC mark torque curves and calibrations. The register lists 31 versions with 362 to 583 hp at 1,698 to 1,977 rpm and 1,450 to 2,050 lb-ft (1,966 to 2,779 Nm) of torque between 1,000 and 1,200 rpm; certifications cover model years 2012 to 2016, electronic direct injection and single-stage turbocharging are recorded throughout, with 'HHDD' – heavy heavy-duty diesel – as the service class.

The ISX15 is tied to the first SCR years: urea dosing, NOx sensors and particulate filter regenerations were the workshop topics, while the base engine with its overhead camshaft and Cummins XPI common rail is regarded as robust.

On used engines, the condition of the aftertreatment (particulate filter, SCR catalyst, dosing module), mileage relative to overhaul history – a million miles is attainable on these engines – and the actually programmed power rating are what count.

What to check before buying

  • Match the data plate against the order: frame size, mounting and rating have to agree.
  • For used units, ask about winding condition and bearing play.
  • Ask about parts availability for this series — the running costs hang on it.
