Cummins ISX12N — the Near-Zero-Emission Natural Gas Engine
The Cummins Westport ISX12N is an inline six-cylinder natural-gas engine of 11.9 litres (130 x 150 mm bore and stroke), turbocharged and charge-air cooled. It is certified to the California Air Resources Board and EPA "Optional Low NOx" standard of 0.02 g/bhp-hr — about 90 percent below the current North American NOx limit — and, depending on rating, produces up to 400 hp and around 1,450 lb-ft (roughly 1,966 N·m) of torque.

Introduced in 2018, the ISX12N replaced the ISX12 G as Cummins' flagship heavy-duty natural-gas engine. It runs on compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG) or renewable natural gas (RNG); Cummins states that RNG operation can deliver a neutral-to-negative carbon footprint.
It powers heavy tractors and distribution trucks — including the Kenworth T680 Next Generation — as well as refuse trucks and buses; ratings on record include ISX12N 400, 385, 350, 330 and 320.
The engine uses a closed crankcase ventilation system and a maintenance-free three-way catalyst rather than a diesel particulate filter. For used units, spark plugs and the stoichiometric control system deserve attention alongside routine oil and filter service; no further type-specific weak points are documented in the sources reviewed.
