Crane Fruehauf – other models: British semi-trailers outside the named ranges, unladen weights from 3,100 to 13,950 kg, gross weights up to 37,500 kg, widths up to 2,600 mm

Crane Fruehauf was a British semi-trailer manufacturer based in Dereham in the English county of Norfolk, which grew out of the British licensed production of the American semi-trailer pioneer Fruehauf and was for decades one of the country's larger trailer builders. This page gathers the versions the register could not assign to a named range. The type designations combine changing letter combinations with a two- to three-digit number sequence that encoded axle configuration and version; a constant feature is the slash separating the two code parts.

The register lists here 21 versions with unladen weights from 3,100 to 13,950 kg, gross weights from 24,000 to 37,500 kg, lengths from 6,850 to 14,200 mm and widths from 2,430 to 2,600 mm.

With gross weights up to 37.5 tonnes, the vehicles sit in the classic range of two- and three-axle semi-trailers for European long-haul transport; British trailer builders supplied both domestic road haulage and hauliers working the ferry traffic between Britain and the European mainland, where curtainside, tipper and tanker bodies were in widespread use.

When buying used, semi-trailers of this age call above all for checking the condition of the chassis and main beams, axles, brakes and kingpin, plus rust on mudguards and underrun protection; on tipper or tanker bodies also the tightness and condition of the hydraulics. Parts for the British Fruehauf-licensed builds are now only available through specialist trailer workshops and axle makers such as BPW or SAF.

What to check before buying

  • Search the frame and welds at the axle mounts — that is where cracks start.
  • Check the brakes and the last inspection in the papers.
  • Work the gross weight against the towing vehicle before buying.
  • Compare the chassis number with the papers.
  • Look at the floor, cover or body from the inside — rust does not show from outside.
