Steyr CVT 6155 (second CVT generation, 2003–2006): six-cylinder diesel with 6,597 cm³ for diesel and rapeseed-oil fuel, 115 kW and a stepless transmission
Before the fourth generation, Steyr, in St. Valentin, Austria, had already built an earlier CVT range with a stepless transmission. The CVT 6155 from this second CVT range was built from 2003 to 2006.

The Steyr CVT 6155 carries a water-cooled six-cylinder diesel engine with 6,597 cm³ of displacement, producing 156 hp, or 115 kW, at 2,100 rpm, and able to run on diesel or rapeseed-oil diesel. At 6,490 kg, 4,740 mm long, 3,000 mm high, 2,490 mm wide and with a 2,806 mm wheelbase, the machine reaches a top speed of 40 km/h.
Even in this earlier CVT generation, the stepless transmission allows low-loss power delivery matched to draft work without any break in the drive, an advantage when ploughing and cultivating against changing pulling loads. At 115 kW from 6,597 cm³ of displacement and with rapeseed-oil capability, the CVT 6155 was built for large-scale farming with its own plant-oil production.
When buying an older CVT tractor used, the condition of the stepless transmission matters most of all, as repairing it after two decades of service can be complex and costly; an extended test drive across the whole speed range is essential. Also worth checking are the injection system when run on rapeseed-oil diesel, the tightness of the hydraulic connections, and the condition of the cooling system under full load.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
- Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
