The EM U/2 comes from Citroen Vanclee. Production: 1981-1982. The engine has 2 cylinders, with a displacement of 602 cm³. The vehicle is 1,510 mm wide. The unladen weight is 614 kg. The wheelbase measures 2,360 mm. The gross vehicle weight is 910 kg. The vehicle runs on 4 wheels. Unladen weight across the Citroen Vanclee range ranges from 614 to 640 kg; the EM U/2 sits at the bottom of that range with 614 kg. Its immediate neighbours are the EMU 2 above it with 640 kg. Gross vehicle weight across the Citroen Vanclee range ranges from 910 to 1,120 kg; here the EM U/2 sits at the bottom of that range with 910 kg. 3 Citroen Vanclee models are on record.

Citroën Vanclee – other models: the collective page of Citroën-based micro utility vehicles outside the named ranges, with EM U/2, EMU 2 and EMV 2, two-cylinder boxer engine of 602 cm³, 614 to 640 kg kerb weight

This page gathers the vehicles carried under the name Citroën Vanclee that the register could not assign to a named range: EM U/2, EMU 2 and EMV 2. All three carry the air-cooled two-cylinder boxer engine of 602 cm³ as used by Citroën in the 2CV and its utility derivatives, with a uniform width of around 1,490 to 1,510 mm.

The register lists here 3 versions with a displacement of 602 cm³ from two cylinders, kerb weights from 614 to 640 kg, gross weights from 910 to 1,120 kg and widths from 1,490 to 1,510 mm.

Micro utility vehicles based on the Citroën two-cylinder formed a market segment of their own for decades, of simple, light and cheap-to-run vans, especially widespread in France and its former colonies, where some remain in use to this day.

With a gross weight well under 1,200 kg, all three versions sit far below today's EU class N1 for commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes; an ordinary car licence sufficed to drive them, and neither road tolls nor the weekend driving ban for lorries ever applied to them. As in the 2CV, the boxer engine drives the front wheels, so the load area gets a flat, low floor free of a propshaft tunnel or rear differential, an unusually usable load volume for such a small vehicle.

On a used example of one of these three versions, the condition of the air-cooled two-cylinder and its carburettors, rust on the often simple sheet-metal body and running gear, the condition of the brakes and, on the utility versions, the load bed and its fixings all count; parts for the 602 cm³ engine are comparatively easy to source through the Citroën 2CV market.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
