The register lists here 5 versions with 80 kW from four- to six-cylinder engines of 2,088 to 2,975 cc, kerb weights of 1,340 to 1,602 kg, gross vehicle weights of 1,880 to 2,160 kg, a length of 4,963 mm and widths of 1,770 to 1,794 mm.

With its Hydractive hydropneumatic suspension, the XM was technically closely related to the CX and the later C5, and as an estate it competed with the Peugeot 605 Break and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class estate. As an N1-registered commercial vehicle it offered unusually high ride comfort for its class.

On all XMs a used-buying check should focus above all on the condition of the Hydractive suspension with its hydropneumatic spheres and hydraulic pump, on the turbodiesels additionally the injection pump and turbocharger, and on the V6 the timing belt. The door seals are also worth checking, as leaks can let water in. Parts for the hydropneumatic system are available through specialist Citroën parts dealers.
