Citroën C25 – the large panel van from the Sevel Nord joint venture: petrol and diesel engines, payloads up to 3.5 tonnes, widths up to 2.44 metres

The C25 was Citroën's large panel van, built from 1981 to 1994 at the Sevel Nord joint-venture plant in Valenciennes shared with Fiat and Peugeot, where the identical Fiat Ducato, Peugeot J5 and later Talbot Express were also built. Model designations such as C25/280G50 state gross vehicle weight in hundred-kilogram steps (280 for 2.8 tonnes) and engine choice; the KAMPEERWAGEN suffix marks a vehicle converted into a motorhome.

The register lists 12 versions with four-cylinder engines, kerb weights from 1,952 to 2,750 kg, gross vehicle weights from 3,100 to 3,500 kg and widths from 2,060 to 2,440 mm.

As one of the first large front-wheel-drive panel-van joint ventures among European makers, the C25, alongside its sister models, set the standard for the upper van segment of the 1980s, and its roomy body made it a frequent basis for motorhome and other conversions. Its main European rivals at the time were the Mercedes-Benz T1 and the Ford Transit, against which the C25 stood out for front-wheel drive and a lower load floor.

When buying used, check corrosion at the wheel arches, sliding-door tracks and load floor, the condition of the clutch and gearbox on the front-wheel-drive diesel engines, and on motorhome conversions dampness in the body and the condition of the fittings. Parts are shared with the identical Fiat and Peugeot models, which eases supply.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
