Chevrolet Starcraft

The register lists 7 versions with a V8 of 5,327 to 6,600 cm³ and outputs of 140 to 231 kW. Unladen weight ranges from 2,645 to 3,500 kg, gross vehicle weight from 3,500 to 4,763 kg. Length runs from 5,600 to 6,290 mm and width from 1,970 to 2,080 mm.

Conversion vans such as the Starcraft served in the United States as a comfortable alternative to a saloon for large families and as a base for camper-like fittings without requiring registration as a motorhome. Such conversions reached Europe only occasionally through importers, remaining an American niche product. The V8 engines of the Chevrolet G30 chassis provided the pulling power needed for heavy special equipment and trailer towing.

On a used example, alongside the technical condition of the Chevrolet chassis – corrosion at the spring mountings, the condition of brakes and axles – the focus is chiefly on the quality of the conversion: roof extensions, special glazing and the additional wiring for interior fittings and entertainment electronics should be checked for weatherproofing and ageing. The drivetrain matches the standard Chevrolet G30 and is well supplied through the regular GM parts network, while conversion parts from Starcraft itself can now only be sourced through specialist van-conversion suppliers.
