Chevrolet Chevy Van – the full-size van of the G range: V8 engines of 5.3 to 6.6 litres, 109 to 231 kW, camper and special conversions

The Chevy Van is General Motors' full-size van of the G range, built in several generations since 1964 and Chevrolet's answer in the US and Canada to the Ford Econoline and Dodge Ram Van; since the 2000s the range has continued under the name Express. The type numbers 10, 20 and 30, and later 1500, 2500 and 3500, give the payload and weight class, G marks the frame type. A large share of the vehicles listed in the register carry conversions by bodybuilders such as Starcraft, which turned the panel van into a motorhome or leisure vehicle with windows, bench seats and a pop-up roof.

The register lists here 40 versions with 109 to 231 kW from eight-cylinders of 5,300 to 6,600 cm³, unladen weights from 2,250 to 4,340 kg, gross weights from 3,549 to 4,770 kg, lengths from 5,150 to 7,440 mm and widths from 1,920 to 2,540 mm.

The Chevy Van is one of the defining North American full-size vans of the 1970s to 1990s and remains popular today in the camper and custom-van scene, where the Starcraft and other conversion versions are especially sought after.

On used examples, rust on frame, sills and wheel arches, the condition of the V8 engine and automatic transmission, on camper conversions the tightness of roof and windows and the wiring of the added equipment all count; parts for the widespread GM V8 engines are readily available through the North American parts market.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.

  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
