Chevrolet Chevy Van (G-series) – General Motors' US full-size van since 1964: G10/G20/G30 as payload classes, petrol V8s and a 6.5-litre turbo-diesel, a popular base for camper conversions
The Chevy Van, internally designated the G-series, was built from 1964 and is the classic North American full-size van with a ladder frame and rear-wheel drive; from 1996 it was replaced by the Chevrolet Express. The G10, G20 and G30 numbers in the type designation follow the usual US payload-class logic from light to heavy. The van was a popular base for motorhome and camper conversions, recognisable in the register by suffixes such as Starcraft or Globemaster, the names of well-known US conversion firms.

The register lists 111 versions with engine outputs of 88 to 157 kW, displacements of 4,096 to 6,500 cm³, six to eight cylinders, unladen weights of 1,700 to 3,310 kg and gross vehicle weights of 2,375 to 3,500 kg; the large displacement at the top end corresponds to the well-known 6.5-litre turbo-diesel V8 from Detroit Diesel/GM.
The Chevy Van shaped North America's full-size van segment for decades alongside its GMC twin and the Ford Econoline, serving both as a delivery vehicle and as a base for motorhome, panel-van and government conversions; its simple, robust engineering also made it a popular import for camper conversions outside the US.
On a used example, what counts is corrosion on the ladder frame and wheel arches, the condition of the automatic transmission, on diesel versions oil loss and mileage on the 6.5-litre V8, wear on the steering and front axle, and — since it was never officially sold in Europe — the limited parts supply through US importers.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
