Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant C – the heavy crawler tractors from the Urals: C-60 and C-65, 55 kW, 13,541 to 18,474 cc, kerb weight 10,000 to 11,200 kg, ligroin and diesel
The Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant (ChTZ) in the Urals began building crawler tractors in 1933 and produced the S-60/S-65 family – listed here in the register as the C-60 and C-65 – heavy tracked tractors whose first versions were built to run on ligroin rather than diesel, since that petroleum derivative was more readily available in Soviet agriculture than diesel fuel; later models then ran on diesel engines.

The register lists 2 variants at 55 kW from a four-cylinder engine of 13,541 to 18,474 cc, kerb weights of 10,000 to 11,200 kg, lengths of 4,086 to 4,090 mm, widths of 2,395 to 2,416 mm, heights of 2,770 to 2,803 mm and rated speeds of 650 to 850 rpm.
These heavy crawler tractors pulled ploughs and heavy tillage equipment across large fields in the Soviet Union and were also used in earthmoving; the low rated speed combined with large displacement was typical of the rugged engine design of the era, built for simple maintenance and lower-grade fuels.
On surviving examples, the condition of the undercarriage, tracks and drive wheels matters, along with compression and tightness of the large engine, and rust on the frame and sheet metal; parts for these Eastern European crawler tractors today are found almost exclusively through specialist dealers in Soviet-era farm machinery, and restorations tend to take considerably longer than on more common Western tractors of comparable age.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
