Caterpillar wheel dozers 814 to 854 – dozing on wheels since 1963: the number logic 814, 824, 834, 844, 854, the tractors 768 to 776 and the 854K with 34.5-litre V12, 161 to 649 kW
The wheel dozer is the bulldozer on rubber tyres: faster than a tracked machine, without undercarriage costs, but without its traction in soft ground – the machine for coal stockpiles, mine loading areas, landfills and road building on firm ground. Caterpillar presented the first wheel dozer of the line with the 824 in 1963, and the line still defines the class today. The number logic: 814 the small class around 20 t, 824 the medium around 30 t, 834 around 47 t, 844 around 75 t and 854 the heaviest around 100 t; the letters B, C, F, G, H and K are generations from the 1970s into the 2010s. The 768, 772 and 776 in the register are wheel tractors of the same layout that served as prime movers for scrapers and coal trailers, the 732 a forerunner.

The register lists 16 versions with 161.1 to 649.1 kW from six- to twelve-cylinders of 10,301 to 34,501 cm³ – 3306 and 3176 in the small, 3406 and 3408 in the medium, 3412 and the 34.5-litre 3512 in the 854K – at rated speeds of 1,750 to 2,100 rpm and operating weights from 20,580 to 101,720 kg.
Wheel dozers share drivetrain and axles with the big wheel loaders of the same frame size – the 834 with the 988, the 854 with the 992 – which simplifies parts and service for Caterpillar and allows mining operators a uniform fleet.
On used machines, operating hours, the condition of frame and articulation joint, transmission and axles under pushing load, blade cylinders and cutting edges and the tyres, which on the big models run in protection chains and have a six-figure replacement price, are what count.
