Steyr M 900 (1997–2001) – the compact three-cylinder from St. Valentin of the first Case years: M 948 to M 975, the number as hp class, a for four-wheel drive
The M 900 was Steyr's compact utility range under 80 hp – the first to be created in St. Valentin, Austria, after Case's takeover of the Steyr tractor division in 1996, and it ran as a twin in red as the Case IH C series. The type logic: M marks the range (the M of Steyr's nomenclature stands for the mechanical transmissions of the small range), the number the hp class – M 948 about 48 hp, M 952 about 52, M 958 about 58, M 968 about 68, M 975 about 75 hp – a four-wheel drive. The engines are Perkins three-cylinders of the 1000 series of 2.7 to 3.1 litres at 2,200 to 2,300 rpm, with direct injection and the approval for rapeseed methyl ester that the register notes on all versions; the transmissions are synchromesh gearboxes with shuttle, optionally with creeper gears, the cab the plain Steyr version with flat floor.

The M 900 is the tractor of grassland and mountain farms in Austria, Bavaria and South Tyrol, where Steyr is market leader – compact, agile at 1.9 metres wide, without electronics; in 2001 the Kompakt range followed in the same logic.
On used tractors, operating hours, Perkins engine and injection pump, clutch and shuttle, four-wheel-drive clutch on a models, hydraulics and loader mounting, sheet metal and cab count; parts run through Steyr dealers, CNH and Perkins.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
- Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
