The Maxxum range introduced Case IH's mid power class in 1988 as the successor to the 5100 series and has since, developed through several generations, been built at Case's St. Valentin plant in Austria. Type numbers such as 5140 or 5150 originally reflected engine output in hp, while later generations with the MX or MC suffix denote revised transmission and cab technology; Maxxum still designates Case IH's mid-class between the compact Farmall and the heavy Magnum tractors.

On a used Maxxum, the condition of the power-shift transmission, engine and hydraulic pump hours, the tightness of the front hydraulics, and wear on the cab mounting, rear power take-off and electronics all matter; spare parts and the service network run through the authorised CNH network.
