Case IH 440 to 740 (1985–1990) – the small Neuss tractors of the first Case IH years: the final digits 40 as series, the first digit as size class, 633 as relative of the 33s

The 40 family is the lower half of the Neuss programme of the first Case IH years: small utility tractors between 40 and 60 hp that the IH plant in Neuss on the Rhine built alongside the 33 series for grassland, part-time and special-crop farms until Case IH moved production to Doncaster at the end of the 1980s. The type logic: the final digits 40 mark the series, the first digit orders the size in ascending order – 440 about 40 hp, 540 about 48, 640 about 55, 740 about 60 hp – the 633 belongs to the sister 33 series with about 50 hp. The engines are IH's own three- and four-cylinders from Neuss – D-155 of 2.5 litres and D-179 of 2.9 litres as three-cylinders, D-206 of 3.4 litres as four-cylinder – at 2,180 to 2,200 rpm, water-cooled with direct injection; the transmissions are eight-speed synchromesh gearboxes with shuttle, the equipment with roll bar or cab.

The register lists 5 versions with 30 to 44 kW from three- and four-cylinders of 2,536 to 3,382 cm³, unladen weights from 2,340 to 2,675 kg, lengths from 3,390 to 3,410 mm, widths from 1,640 to 1,644 mm and heights from 2,280 to 2,370 mm.

The 40s are the Neuss tractors that still do the daily work on small farms in southern Germany and Austria today – at 1.64 metres wide they fit through yard gateways and into orchards, and their technology is repairable without electronics.

On used tractors, operating hours, engine condition and injection pump, clutch and gearbox, four-wheel-drive clutch on four-wheel-drive models, hydraulics and sheet metal count; parts run through Case IH and Neuss specialists.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
