Belarus MTZ-82 S: four-wheel-drive tractor from the Minsk Tractor Works with a 4,750cc four-cylinder diesel, 51 kW and an 18-speed gearbox
Belarus is the export brand of the Minsk Tractor Works in the Republic of Belarus, which from the 1950s onward built agricultural tractors in vast numbers for the Soviet Union and its successor states and still ranks among the largest tractor manufacturers in the world. The MTZ-82 range is the four-wheel-drive version of the two-wheel-drive MTZ-80 and for decades formed the backbone of field work across Eastern Europe, Central Asia and beyond.

The MTZ-82 S carries a four-cylinder diesel engine with 4,750 cm³ of displacement, producing 51 kW and sent through an 18-speed gearbox to all four wheels. Permissible gross weight stands at 5,180 kg, unladen weight at 3,840 kg; at 4,050 mm long and 2,360 mm wide the machine stays compact enough for narrow lanes and yard access while remaining heavy enough for towed implements.
The many gear ratios allow fine matching of field and road speed without pushing the sturdy diesel far outside its economical range. Four-wheel drive makes the MTZ-82 a versatile tractor for ploughing and cultivating, haulage and front-loader work, where the pulling force has to be shared across both axles.
When buying used, the condition of the front axle and the transfer gearbox matters most, since both carry heavier loads in the four-wheel-drive version than in the two-wheel model. Also worth checking are the clutch discs, the tightness of the front and rear hydraulic connections, and corrosion damage to the frame and mudguards, which is common on machines of this age.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
