Steyr, the commercial-vehicle plant of Steyr-Daimler-Puch in the Upper Austrian town of Steyr, built trucks from the 1920s and was known above all for off-road, all-wheel-drive vehicles with the 4x4, 6x6 and 8x4 drive formulas for construction, forestry and the military; the truck division was absorbed into the MAN group in the 1990s. The type designations in the register follow a number-and-letter scheme: a power or weight class before the slash, a letter code for chassis and cab after it, and the drive formula at the end – for example 19S24/K38/4X4 or 27S42/P50/6X2 – supplemented by special versions such as the Steyr 680 and the 1291 series for heavy transport.
