GMC CCKW – the 'Deuce and a Half' of the Second World War: 2.5-ton 6×6 truck with a six-cylinder engine, A2, B1 and H2 variants, 66 to 74 kW, gross vehicle weights up to 9,276 kg

The GMC CCKW is the 2.5-ton all-wheel-drive truck General Motors developed from 1941 for the US Army and built in more than one version until the war ended in 1945; the four letters of the type designation follow GMC's own code — the first C for the 1941 design year, the second C for the conventional cab-over-engine layout, K for all-wheel drive and W for the driven rear tandem axle. Known as the 'Deuce and a Half', the CCKW with its six-cylinder engine formed the backbone of Allied supply logistics, including on the famous Red Ball Express route after the Normandy landings.

The register lists 18 versions with 66 to 74 kW, all six-cylinder, with displacements of 2,690 to 4,730 cc, unladen weights of 4,240 to 5,400 kg, gross vehicle weights of 5,375 to 9,276 kg, lengths of 5,850 to 7,550 mm and widths of 2,170 to 2,450 mm.

With well over a hundred thousand units built, the CCKW ranks among the most-produced military trucks in history and, as a second-hand civilian vehicle after the war, shaped reconstruction and agricultural fleets in many countries; today it is a sought-after collector's vehicle among military-history associations.

When buying used, check for rust on the ladder frame and leaf-spring packs, the condition of the transfer case and axle differentials, the integrity of the waterproofed electrical system, and the originality of the cab and cargo bed; parts are supplied almost exclusively through specialist military-vehicle restorers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
