Anton Schlüter München Profi Trac 5000 TVL: the heavy large tractor from Freising with a MAN industrial engine, 382 kW, an eight-speed gearbox with hydraulic torque converter and an 18-tonne weight

Anton Schlüter München was a German tractor maker with a plant in Freising near Munich, specialising in large, powerful farm tractors; for its heaviest ranges it bought in engines from other makers, because its own engine production only covered smaller displacements. The brand ended vehicle production in 1993. The Profi Trac 5000 TVL is among the largest tractors the company built.

The engine comes from MAN and has a displacement of 20,911 cm³; output is 382 kW. The gearbox is from ZF, with a hydraulic torque converter, a dry clutch and a manual eight-speed gearbox. The tractor is 6,250 mm long, 2,720 mm wide and 3,460 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,890 mm and a weight of 18,000 kg.

A bought-in industrial engine of this size and a gearbox with a hydraulic torque converter instead of a simple mechanical clutch belong to a different class from the ordinary farm tractor: the combination was intended for very heavy draft work with wide, multi-furrow implements or for operation with especially large trailed loads, as found on very large farms or in special uses away from ordinary fieldwork. The torque converter also allows a smooth start under full load without overloading the clutch.

On a machine like this, the condition of the MAN engine and the ZF converter gearbox matters most, because parts for this combination do not run through the ordinary farm-machinery parts network but through the commercial-vehicle and industrial-engine trade. Also important are the condition of the hydraulics, the tyres in this size and, on a vehicle of this age, rust on the frame and cab.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
