Allgaier of Uhingen near Göppingen is the origin of the Porsche-Diesel: the metalware maker built tractors from 1946, acquired the licence for Ferdinand Porsche's people's tractor design in 1949 and from 1950 built the AP 17 – the first tractor with a Porsche engine – before Porsche-Diesel Motorenbau GmbH in Friedrichshafen took over production in 1956. The type logic: AP stands for Allgaier-Porsche, the number for the hp class – AP 16 about 16 hp, AP 17 17 hp, AP 22 22 hp – S for the upgrade with improvements to gearbox and equipment, AP17-51 for the 1951 model year. The engines are the air-cooled two-cylinder diesels to Porsche design of 1.4 to 1.5 litres at 2,000 rpm, with the hydraulic clutch that gave the Porsche tractors their jerk-free starting and which the Allgaier models were the first to carry.
