The 6690 from AGCO Allis is part of the 6600er series. Production: 1991–1997. The engine delivers 90 hp (66.2 kW), has 4 cylinders, with a displacement of 4,000 cm³. The engine comes from SAME. Torque is 304 Nm. Rated speed is 2,500 rpm. The machine is 4,094 mm long, 2,093 mm wide and 2,824 mm high. The unladen weight is 3,110 kg. The wheelbase measures 2,449 mm. Ground clearance is 440 mm. Top speed is 30 km/h. Transmission: 12 V/12 R, 16 V/16 R, 24 V/12 R and 30 V/30 R. The engine is air-cooled. Tyres: front 7.50-18 ASF (4 WD: 14.9 R 24 AS), rear 16.9 R 34 AS. The model was built in Italy. The fuel is diesel. The bore measures 105 mm. The stroke is 115.5 mm. The compression ratio is 16:1. Maximum torque is reached at 1,355 rpm. Construction: unit construction (no separate frame). The 6.600 er - Baureihe series covers 3 models. Rated output within it ranges from 70 to 90 hp; the 6690 sits at the top of that range with 90 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the 6680 below it with 80 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 2,800 to 3,110 kg; here the 6690 sits at the top of that range with 3,110 kg. 58 AGCO Allis models across 14 series are on record.

AGCO Allis 6600 series, types 6670 to 6690 – four-cylinder diesels from the US maker in Duluth: 51.5 to 66.2 kW, 2,800 to 3,110 kg, 4,000 cm³ displacement

AGCO Allis was formed in 1990 when the newly founded US group AGCO, headquartered in Duluth, Georgia, took over the agricultural machinery division of Allis-Chalmers and for a time built the tractors under the combined name AGCO Allis. The 6600 series with the types 6670, 6680 and 6690 represented the mid power class; the last two digits order the models by ascending power. Production initially took over much of the existing Allis-Chalmers plants and supplier structure, before AGCO gradually switched the model range to its own series.

The register lists 3 versions with 51.5 to 66.2 kW (63 to 80 hp) from four-cylinder diesel engines of 4,000 cm³ displacement, torque of 239 to 304 Nm at 2,350 to 2,500 rpm. Unladen weights range from 2,800 to 3,110 kg, lengths from 4,064 to 4,094 mm, widths from 1,970 to 2,093 mm and heights from 2,743 to 2,824 mm.

As general-purpose tractors for mid-sized farms, the 6600 series competed directly with equally powerful models from Ford, Case IH and its own group sibling Massey Ferguson; the short lifespan of the AGCO Allis brand in the early 1990s makes these types comparatively rare today. The cab offered comfort typical for the era, with power steering and an enclosed operator station, which also suited the tractor to longer days of field work.

When buying used, what counts is the operating hours and service condition of the four-cylinder diesel, clutch and gearbox, the condition of the hydraulics and PTO, and corrosion on body panels; parts now mostly run through the AGCO dealer network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
