The ABB M3MA 90 MA 2 is a three-phase induction motor from the M3MA series. The rated output is 1.5 kW. The motor is two-pole, which at 50 Hz gives a synchronous speed of 3,000 rpm. The housing is frame size 90. The protection class is IP66. The efficiency is 88.5 per cent at full load, 89.5 per cent at 75 per cent load and 89 per cent at half load. Stated countries of manufacture: Poland and Finland. The figures come from the Australian MEPS register under the GEMS Determination 2019; measured to IEC 60034-2-1 (Edition 2.0). The M3MA series covers 22 models. Rated output within it ranges from 0.75 to 7.5 kW; the M3MA 90 MA 2 sits at the bottom of that range with 1.5 kW. Its immediate neighbours are the M3MA 90 MC 6 below it with 1.1 kW and the M3MA 100 LA 4 above it with 2.2 kW. 2141 ABB models across 12 series are on record.

ABB M3MA – the range of IP66 three-phase low-voltage motors from Poland and Finland, frame sizes 80 to 132, 0.75 to 7.5 kW, 2- to 6-pole, fully classified High Efficiency Level 2005/2018

The M3MA range belongs to the M3 generation of ABB low-voltage motors, which ABB Motion traditionally builds in Finland (Vaasa, formerly Strömberg) and Poland, the roots of the Swedish-Swiss ASEA-BBC merger of 1988. Type designations follow the scheme of frame size, build length and pole count, such as M3MA 100 LA 2 for frame size 100, length LA, two-pole. Notable is the uniform IP66 protection across all 22 motors, a dust- and jet-water-protected version above the IP55 usually seen on ABB standard motors.

The register lists here 22 versions with 0.75 to 7.5 kW, two- to six-pole, full-load efficiencies from 83.2 to 92.1% and at 75% load from 81.9 to 91.7%. Frame sizes run from 80 to 132, the 230/400/415/690/500 V supply rating covers almost every common mains voltage. Manufacturing is in Poland and Finland, testing followed the 2019 GEMS determination; all 22 motors carry a High Efficiency classification, 13 the 2005 level and 9 the 2018 level.

With uniform IP66 protection, the M3MA range targets applications with heavy dust or moisture exposure, such as food processing, wash-down and cleaning technology or outdoor use, where the usual IP55 version falls short.

When buying used, on IP66 versions the condition of shaft seals and housing gaskets, a checked insulation resistance of the winding, bearing, shaft and key condition, and a legible nameplate with frame size, pole count and efficiency class matter especially. Spares run through the ABB service network.

Frequently asked questions

How much power does the ABB M3MA 90 MA 2 have?

The ABB M3MA 90 MA 2 delivers 1.5 kW.

What to check before buying

  • Match the data plate against the order: frame size, mounting and rating have to agree.
  • Check the ingress rating against the installation site — outdoors or in dust the demands differ.
  • Hold the mounting form and dimensions against the existing seat before ordering.
  • The pole count sets the speed — when replacing an older unit, compare this first.
  • For used units, ask about winding condition and bearing play.
  • Ask about parts availability for this series — the running costs hang on it.
