Crankcase ventilation valves and oil separators: routing blow-by gases into the intake tract, crankcase pressure control
Crankcase ventilation returns blow-by gases, which pass the piston rings into the crankcase, back into the intake tract instead of releasing them to atmosphere. An oil separator first removes the entrained oil mist so the turbocharger and charge air cooler are not fouled with oil; it works as an impingement, labyrinth or cyclonic separator. A control valve keeps crankcase pressure within narrow limits: many closed systems regulate a slight vacuum against oil escaping at shaft seals, while a passive system only limits overpressure.
Whether a system is passive or actively regulated, whether the separator is integrated or a separate component, and whether a heater prevents condensate freezing differs between engine families and model years. Crankcase ventilation counts as an emission source for certification purposes, and its function is part of the official test. If the diaphragm sticks closed, overpressure builds up and shows as oil leaking at shaft seals or the valve cover gasket. If the valve sticks open or the vacuum calibration is too strong, oil consumption rises. A clogged separator lets oil mist pass unfiltered into the intake tract, recognisable from oil deposits in the charge air system; frozen condensate in cold weather can block the ventilation path.
On replacement, matching by part number counts rather than appearance, since housings from different generations often look alike while opening pressure and valve calibration differ. What should be checked are the hoses, the heater connector, gaskets and routing of the ventilation paths without kinks. Price and availability are not covered on this page.
