Motor-pump trailers were and are common with smaller fire brigades, works fire brigades and civil-protection units, because they provide a capable pump far more cheaply than a complete fire engine and can be towed by ordinary municipal vehicles; many units remain in active service with smaller local brigades to this day, often as a second line behind a full fire engine.

On a used purchase, the function and output of the pump, the condition of suction and delivery hoses and couplings, the tightness of water tanks where fitted, the axle and brakes, the condition of chassis and drawbar, the coupling head and jockey wheel, and a valid inspection sticker on both the chassis and the fire-fighting equipment all count.
