As a brand with a long tradition but several changes of ownership, Westfalia in the register stands mainly for older, long-lived horse and car trailers still in use despite the changes of company; its rivals were, and are, Böckmann and Humbaur.

On the sometimes decades-old Westfalia trailers, pay particular attention to frame corrosion, the condition and serviceability of the coupling head and overrun brake, the axles and rubber-torsion suspension, the lighting system, the floor and tarpaulin or bodywork, and tyre age; because of the company's turbulent history, parts supply for older model years can be limited, so it is worth having the chassis number checked with the current brand owner before buying.
