Westfalia traces back to a blacksmith's shop that Johann Bernhard Knöbel opened in 1844 in Rheda-Wiedenbrück; the name Westfalia was registered in 1922, and the first car trailer left the works in 1927. With a patented chassis, Westfalia became market leader in horse trailers (well-known ranges Joker, Jupiter, XXL), before the Westfalia-Werke group was split up in 1999 – trailer building, towbars and camper conversions have gone separate ways ever since. The trailer division later passed to Heinemann, went insolvent, and in 2005 the newly founded Westfalia Trailer Systems GmbH acquired the brand rights, construction plans and tooling out of the insolvency estate; the brand now belongs to an Austrian company.
