The Amarok positioned itself as a premium pickup with car-like handling and established the lifestyle-capable double-cab pickup category in Europe alongside classic trade and construction-site vehicles; the later V6 TDI of up to 3.0 litres underlined its ambition as the segment's flagship.

When buying used, check for rust on the load bed and rear leaf-spring mounts, the condition of the dual-mass flywheel and dual-clutch unit on automated transmissions, stone-chip damage to the front end, and the service history of the four-wheel-drive system; parts are supplied through the regular Volkswagen commercial-vehicle network.
