Alongside the Ford Ranger and Mitsubishi L200, the Hilux is regarded as one of the most durable pickup ranges, used in agriculture and construction as well as, in armed variants, by aid organisations and armed forces.

On used examples, important points are rust on the ladder frame, especially on the cross-members behind the cab, the condition of the transfer case and hubs on 4WD versions, the injection pump on older diesel models, corrosion on the load bed, and, on vehicles with military or commercial use, the history of previous owners.
