Tieflader Cometto: heavy low-loader EU class O4 trailer with a 28,000 kg gross weight, 8,200 mm length, 6,300 kg unladen weight and 21,700 kg payload

A Tieflader is the German term for a trailer with a strongly lowered loading deck, giving a low loading height for tall or bulky cargo such as construction machinery, containers or plant components. The name Cometto refers to an Italian company that has for decades built heavy low-loader and modular trailers as well as self-propelled heavy modules for transporting large structural components. This trailer, built in 1992, belongs to that vehicle group.

With a gross weight of 28,000 kg the vehicle sits in EU trailer class O4, the group of heavy trailers above 10 tonnes. Empty, the low-loader weighs 6,300 kg, leaving a payload of 21,700 kg. At 8,200 mm long and 2,500 mm wide the vehicle is comparatively compact, which, combined with the lowered deck, suits cargo that is tall rather than especially long.

As an O4-class vehicle, the trailer carries a dual-line compressed-air braking system, mandatory from class O3 upward. Low-loaders of this kind are used above all for transporting construction machinery and plant components, where the low loading height keeps the combination under the permitted overall height.

When buying a low-loader secondhand, the lowered deck deserves particular attention: loading ramps, lashing points and the welds around the drop section should be checked for wear and cracks. The braking system and its lines should be checked for leaks, and the axles and wheel bearings for play, especially after years of carrying varying, often centrally concentrated heavy loads.
