Seddon Pennine 7 – a British bus chassis with a horizontal Gardner six-cylinder: 6HLXB engine, a synchronised ZF gearbox or a Self-Changing Gears epicyclic transmission, named after the Pennine hills

The Pennine 7 is powered by a horizontal six-cylinder diesel engine from the British maker Gardner, the 6HLXB. Power is transmitted, depending on the version, by a synchronised ZF gearbox with four or six speeds or a semi-automatic, air-operated epicyclic transmission from Self-Changing Gears with four or five speeds.
The horizontally mounted Gardner engine allowed a lower vehicle floor than an upright engine, an advantage for coach and service-bus bodies wanting as much interior space as possible. The choice between a classic manual gearbox and the semi-automatic Self-Changing Gears epicyclic transmission depended on the intended use: service buses benefited from the more comfortable automatic, coaches often from the more economical manual gearbox.
For a used Pennine 7, check the condition of the horizontal Gardner six-cylinder at the oil-pan seals and injection pump, the operation of the fitted gearbox or epicyclic transmission, and corrosion on the chassis frame and on the bodywork of the respective builder. Since Gardner engines are no longer produced, parts supply today is limited to specialist British heritage commercial-vehicle firms.
