Scania, based in Södertälje, has built trucks since 1902 and for decades has marked the cab form of its ranges with the letter P for the low, short cab without sleeping comfort, typical for distribution, construction and regional transport, as opposed to taller long-haul cabs such as R. The PA 4X2 range in the register comprises two-axle chassis with twelve-metre haulers and tractor units, whose type code carries, besides the cab form, the gearbox and body variant in the model name, for instance as an AS, ZL or ZS version.

The PA 4X2 was among the lighter two-axle chassis of the older Scania ranges, used in regional and distribution transport and for tractor duties with a trailer, before the PGRT generation replaced the programme from 2004.
On a used example from this model-year span, rust on the frame and cab mounts, the condition of clutch and manual gearbox, brakes and the trailer coupling on the tractor versions, and general parts availability for older assemblies all count; parts run through the Scania service network and the used-parts market.
