The four-cylinder diesel engine, at 1,968 cc, drives a vehicle 6.98 m long and 2.16 m wide, on a 4.49 m wheelbase with four wheels. It weighs 2,986 kg unladen and is rated for 3,500 kg gross weight, giving on paper only around 514 kg of payload. Top speed is 158 km/h, typical of a light chassis without the speed limit that applies to heavier trucks.
At 3,500 kg the vehicle stays within EU class N1 for light commercial vehicles and can be driven on a category B licence. That only around 514 kg of the gross weight is left for payload is not an error in the figures on a horsebox, but follows from the body's own substantial weight, with partitions, a ramp and ventilation, which already claims a large share of the permitted weight before any animal is even loaded.
On a used horsebox of this kind it is worth checking the ramp for load-bearing capacity and ease of operation, the partitions and floor covering for wear from animal contact, and the ventilation of the transport area. The frame and body mounting for corrosion, the brakes given the small margin between kerb and gross weight, and the service history of the diesel engine deserve the same attention.
