A hose-reel irrigator such as the R2/1A 90/300 draws in a rain-gun cart anchored at the edge of the field, connected by a hose that winds onto a reel as it is pulled in; water pressure at the same time drives a turbine or gearbox that turns the reel, controlling the retraction speed and so the amount of water applied. The rain gun itself distributes the water over a circular area around its travel path using a rotating jet.
The suitable size depends on hose length and diameter, which together set the field length that can be irrigated and the possible water throughput. Abstracting water from a well or watercourse requires a water-rights permit in most European countries.
On a used machine, what counts is the hose's condition for cracks, abrasion and pressure resistance, since it is wound and unwound repeatedly with every use. Equally important are the reel's bearings, the condition of the turbine or gearbox driving the reel, the tightness of the connections, and wear on the rain gun's nozzle. It is also worth checking the condition of the chassis tyres and the function of the end-stop mechanism, which automatically halts the reel at the end of the hose.
