Boat trailers of this type are built for frequent contact with water, often fitted with skids or rollers instead of a fixed load bed so the boat can slide off during launching. The overrun brake acts automatically on the thrust generated when the towing vehicle brakes and needs no compressed-air supply of its own.

When buying used, corrosion protection matters most: repeated contact with fresh or salt water during launching attacks the frame, axle and wheel bearings hard unless sealed, regularly greased bearings are fitted. Also check the condition of the overrun mechanism, the skids or rollers, and the lights, which are particularly stressed by submersion in water. It is also worth checking the jockey wheel and safety chains, which are often neglected on boat trailers used mainly during the summer season.
