The Space Runner RA replaced Nissan Diesel's long-running UA range in 2005 as the standard transit-bus chassis, carrying over key technical foundations from its predecessor, including its proven modular wheelbase system.

The Space Runner RA is powered by the MD92TJ diesel engine, a further development of the MD92 used in the UA, paired with a manual five- or six-speed gearbox or a five-speed ZF Ecomat automatic. As with its predecessor, the wheelbase is set at 4.8, 5.3, 5.8 or 6.5 m, allowing short city-bus or longer intercity-bus bodies depending on the order.

With the revised MD92TJ engine and the same wheelbase options as the UA, the Space Runner RA targeted the same range of uses, from short city buses to longer intercity buses, letting operators move to the newer engine without giving up established body lengths. For body builders this meant that the tooling and design base of their existing UA bodies remained largely usable.

For a used Space Runner RA, check the condition of the injection system and turbocharger on the MD92TJ engine, the operation of the manual gearbox or the ZF Ecomat automatic, and corrosion on the chassis frame and wheel arches, typical of transit buses in daily service. Because the engine is closely related to the older MD92 from the UA, many wear parts can be sourced from the same suppliers as for the predecessor model.
