Self-propelled windrowers such as the MF 9000 range cut grass or forage and lay it in swaths to wilt before it is turned into silage or hay. They are used chiefly in grassland farming and by contractors, where high area output counts during the short forage harvesting season.

When buying used, the cutterbars and conditioners should be checked for wear on knives and tines, along with the condition of drive belts and clutches, which are heavily stressed while mowing. The engine and hydraulic system should be checked for documented servicing, as should the tyres for even wear.
