Schilter Junior (Junior series): air-cooled single-cylinder diesel engine of 391 cc displacement, rated at 9 hp, an especially low and light small tractor from the Swiss manufacturer, built between 1962 and 1966
Maschinenfabrik Schilter & Co in Stans built the Junior as an especially small and light tractor for work in the tightest spaces, in demand in Swiss mountain farming with its narrow terraces and steep slopes. The Junior was built between 1962 and 1966 and formed the most compact version in Schilter's range of the period.

The Junior is driven by an air-cooled single-cylinder diesel engine of 391 cc displacement, rated at 9 hp. At an unladen weight of only 460 kg, the tractor measures 2,400 mm in length, 1,300 mm in width and just 980 mm in height. Wheelbase is 1,400 mm, top speed 16 km/h.
At under a metre tall and weighing only 460 kg, the Junior belongs to the smallest class of small tractors, built for vineyards, orchards and narrow terraced plots where neither a normal wheeled tractor nor a larger single-axle machine can fit. Its low height also gives a low centre of gravity when working on slopes.
When buying a used Schilter Junior, check the single-cylinder engine for compression, the brakes given the work on steep slopes, and the steering and chassis for distortion after decades of use in tight terrain. Parts are mainly supplied by workshops and collectors specialising in historic Swiss mountain machinery. It is also worth checking the drawbar and towing linkage for wear, since even a tractor this small was regularly used to pull loaded carts on steep ground.
