Asphalt cookers are heated kettles on a trailer chassis of EU class O2 that keep asphalt material at working temperature for repairing potholes, joints and excavations in road construction and maintenance; the narrow body width of around 1.7 metres allows work at the roadside without a full closure and towing with an ordinary category BE licence, so the units can be run by small road crews within live traffic.

On a used unit, the kettle and its insulation for tightness and condition, the heating system including the burner and safety valves, the chassis, axle and brake system, and the lighting and coupling all count; on older kettles the corrosion of the inner wall, the function of the temperature gauge, the seals of the lid and discharge opening, and the mounting of the kettle to the trailer frame are also worth checking.
